Sync Vs. Master Use?

a bit of a newbie question, but I'm a little confused about the difference between a sync and a master use license. Do I have to have both if I want to let someone use my music in a short film?

Basically, the synch license allows the filmmaker to use your composition in "synchronized relation" to their film. The master use license refers to the actual recording itself - allowing them to use that particular recording of your piece. In your case, your piece and the recording of the piece have all been done by you, so the two are in essence the same. But if you were a recording artist, you may have recorded the song, but it may have been written by someone else, so there are multiple rights in play.
