Getting A Huge Fat Sound - Composer Focus

Getting A Huge Fat Sound

Posted 12 April 2011

I'm trying to get that huge sound that you hear in hollywood movies. Like where the bass is massive and big but not muddy. Any tips and tricks anyone can suggest? Is it about EQing the individual tracks, or the final stereo bus? Is there a specific plugin or something? I'm getting an ok sound but mostly kinda flabby instead of huge lol.

Getting a huge sound has more to do with orchestration than plug-ins and EQ. Sometimes when I want huge percussion sounds I'll layer things. Just listen carefully to some of your favorite scores at different volume levels. You'll be surprised what you hear.

the trick whit layering sound is a good one
and if it is brass maybe use different parts of a brass en sample at different keys
like the deeper the sound is the lower key

Yea I hear what u are saying. I'm talking about the final mix, after layering etc. It sounds big enough ok, for me in my place, but if I a/b it against like, Zimmer or Powell or whatever - phhht lol. Extra steps? Magic spice?

If you do a web search for Alan Meyerson you might find some useful tips. He's the guy who mixes a lot of Zimmer's scores.
