Hi everybody,

This is me singing all the parts to Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium. Let me know what you think!

Impressive.

A little too processed for my tastes though. Might as well use a synth patch if it's going to come out sounding more like a synth patch than real human voices. How did you record it?

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the complement! I'm not sure what a synth patch is, but I recorded it using ntrack studio. I created midi files for each part and sang the part as I listened to it. I then combined all the parts into a single file and mixed it down. I used a reverb effect and a couple of VST chorus effects. The mic was an AT2020.

Thanks again,
Bruce

P.S. I've never had vocal training and would appreciate any constructive criticism.

Synth Patch = synthesizer sound - like turning on a synthesizer and choosing a "choir" sound or "ooh" sound (common synth vocal-like patches).

What I'm most likely hearing is the chorus effect.

IMHO, you don't really need it - I'd like to hear a version without any chorus on it - I bet it will be much clearer and less "artificial" sounding.

You should definitely keep working at this if you like it - it's a great skill-building exercise.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info! I' m in the process of beefing up my computer and lost part of the O Magnum project. I'll try to reconstruct it and post a link to the song without chorus effects. In the meantime, I ran across a recording of Tallis' Spem In Alium 40 part motet. Yeah you guessed it - I'm going to sink my teeth into that one! That ought to push my hardware and software to the limit! I'll try to keep you posted on my progress.

Thanks again for the encouragement,
Bruce

Hi Steve,

Thank goodness it wasn't too hard to reconstuct the project. Here is an updated link to the song without the chorus effects.
